My name is Dick and this is my story.

I lived in southern California where you could ride year round - and I did! But my brother started this story by showing up on his new candy apple red 750. This was early Nov. 1969. I ran outside to take a look. Wow, what a bike!!! He said "You can't believe how smooth this bike is!" It was running and nothing on the bike was moving, not even the mirrors. It didn't shake one little bit. I gave the throttle a slight crank and the bike revved instantly. It felt more like an electric motor than a piston one, it was that smooth. I conned him into letting me take it for a ride. Before I took off, I just sat there for awhile just to get the feel of the bike. The color was so bright and the engines were so big! I shut it off for a minute just so that I could restart it. Turn the key back on, touch the button, and it started instantly. I shifted it to first and left the driveway. I could hear my brother saying, "Don’t hammer it! It's still brand new!" I took a short trip around the area. I could feel he power and smoothness, I didn't need to hammer it to know it would be lighting fast and I knew that I had to get one. Finances could be tough being a young married man with three kids, but I had to have a 750 of my own! I went to work on making that happen. I stopped at Herb Friedlander imports in Huntington Beach. He had a blue one in the showroom. I was all over it. When the salesman came up and asked what I thought, well, I said, "It's beautiful, and I want a red one!" "Well, okay," he said as he unzipped the cover on the on the candy apple red bike right next to the blue one I was looking at. I didn't even notice it with the cover on, but as the cover came off .. Holy Smokes, that was the bike I had to have! We made the deal and Vin # 6511 was mine! I got them to throw in the cover as part of the deal, also.

The paper work didn't come as fast them as it does now, no fax or email. So it was the next day before I could pick up my new bike. Wow. you talk about the night before Christmas!! When I got to the dealership late in the afternoon of the next day, my bike was already outside in front of the showroom. My cover was folded up on the seat. My bike was ready and waiting for me! I went in to sign on the line and get the keys. The salesman thanked me and off I went.

Oh. what a feeling! The smoothness, the great sound of the 4 pipes and the big gauges ...WOW!

Fast forward to 1975. My family and I moved to Washington state and my candy apple red 750 #6511 came with us. It was showing close to 50 thousand miles by then and still running like a top and looking good!

Fast forward to 1994 ( Sandcast?). One of my friends from my car club, who is also a motorcycle guy with more than just one motorcycle as well as a few cars, told me that a couple of guys from his work told him about a vintage bike run. That's sounded like a lot of fun to go on. He asked me if I wanted to go and said that I could ride my old 750, and he would ride his Kawasaki. He said the Vintage Club that puts on the run would like participants to ride a bike that was 25 years old, or older. I guess #6511 is about 25 years old....where did the time go? We went on the bike run and there was old bikes everywhere! Man was that neat! the ride ended in a park where they had a bike show, field events, real greasy food, and things like that. Then we had one great big tire-kicking time where most of the guys went to the parked bikes and swapped stories. We were all there talking about our bikes and stuff when a few other 750 Hondas like mine pulled up and parked next to mine. I moved over to look at theirs and they were looking at mine, when all of the sudden one of the guys yelled out "This is a sandcast!" and he looked at my bike from front to back. He asked if it was mine and if I knew it was a sandcast. I said that it was mine, but I didn't say anything else because I was thinking, "What the Hell is a sandcast?" I just stood there and watched as he showed his friends the rough engine cases on by bike. The early 750 engines were sandcasted. He told his friends to look at the seat and how it sticks up in the back, then he asked me if he could look in the gas tank. I opened it up and he showed his friends how it's wrinkled inside. He said that that is how the early tanks were and that the first 7000 or so were hand built. He told me that this bike was amazing and other than the pipes and tires it looked very original. I told him that he was right. He asked me when I got it and how long I had had it. This is the fun part for me.... I told him that I bought it new, and man, was he surprised! So, now I know the word, sandcast, and what it means.

Fast forward to 2007. For my good friend, Jim and myself, this was our 13th year of riding on the Vintage Motorcycles Enthusiasts' Isle of Vashon motorcycle run in Washington. Now for the best part.... My candy apple red Honda sandcast #6511 was built in 9 of 69 and turned 63,000 miles on the run in 2007. Other than service items and pipes (lot of them), #6511 is in unrestored original condition and, yes, I still have its original California black license plate. I even have the small cans of touch-up paint the came with the bike, one black and one red. Since I learned the term sandcast in the mid 90s I have never seen another one. I still enjoy ridding this magnificent bike and I look forward to meeting all of you one day to share my story and photos of our sandcast motorcycles.

Thanks,
    Dick Hull
